Best Time to Visit East Africa for Safari

East Africa is the birthplace of the safari  home to Kenya’s golden plains, Tanzania’s endless Serengeti, Uganda’s lush forests, and Rwanda’s misty volcanoes. Every season brings something magical, so the “best time” depends on what you want to see and experience.

Here’s our guide to planning your dream safari across East Africa.

Kenya & Tanzania: The Classic Safari Lands

January – March: Predator Action
Dry, sunny weather makes animals easy to spot. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are especially active in the Maasai Mara and Serengeti.

June – October: The Great Migration
Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras cross the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara. River crossings filled with crocodiles make this the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth.

November – December: Green Season
Short rains transform the plains into lush landscapes. It’s calving season in the Serengeti, so you’ll witness thousands of baby wildebeest and zebra — and plenty of predators nearby.

Uganda & Rwanda: Gorilla & Chimpanzee Encounters

June – September & December – February: Best Gorilla Tracking
These dry months are perfect for trekking through the rainforests of Bwindi (Uganda) and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda). Trails are more manageable, and the chances of finding gorilla families are highest.

March – May & October – November: Rainy but Rewarding
Heavier rains make trekking more challenging, but the forests are incredibly beautiful and less crowded. Gorilla permits can also be cheaper in Uganda during this time.

Why East Africa is a Year-Round Destination

Unlike other safari regions, East Africa never “closes.”

  • Dry seasons (June–October & January–March) mean easier wildlife spotting and great weather.

  • Green seasons (April–May & November–December) mean dramatic scenery, fewer tourists, and lower rates.

Whether you’re chasing the Great Migration, trekking mountain gorillas, or enjoying the peace of the green season, East Africa always delivers.

✨ Our Advice

  • For big game and migration action → July–October (Kenya & Tanzania).

  • For gorillas and chimpanzees → June–September or December–February (Uganda & Rwanda).

  • For lush landscapes, birding, and value travel → April–May or November.
